Any wild guesses? Let me narrow it down for you by eliminating some catastrophic scenarios you might be thinking about:  no, we won’t be hit by a meteor or a comet. No, the world will not end. And no, aliens will not come to earth and whisk us all away in their spaceships!

(Of course, I might be wrong, in which case all I can say is…oops!:)

New Year’s Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on all these changes we are so eager to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. I don’t need to use my Mentalist abilities to know that most of my subscribers didn’t even know that they wanted to be Mentalists back in 2011! Just looking at the influx of new subscribers during 2012 proves it!
But as Mentalists we must follow some important rules and develop certain abilities that other normal people don’t have. And this is why I decided to write this article that will shed some light on the hidden things we must perfect throughout the new year. I will go over seven of the keys that – I believe – make a Mentalist better in his endeavors! I will highlight the main things but worry not! As members of my special program you will receive in depth lessons about each and every one of these seven keys soon!

So what are the 7 major things we must perfect this year in order to master the basic steps to reading people and analyzing them?

1. Don’t worry be happy

Smile and the world smiles with you!
A smile says a lot about you: that you are positive, approachable, and likeable. Why are these qualities important for a mentalist?
Just ask yourself: would YOU want to have anything to do with a mentalist who is morose-looking? Such a person sends out a non-verbal message that shouts: “STAY AWAY FROM ME!”
A lack of smile could be fine for people who have no contact with the public or whose work doesn’t depend on an affable attitude. But if a mentalist chooses to sulk, he might as well shoot himself in the foot, or find another profession that doesn’t require people to open up to him.
As I mentioned these seven powerful mentalism techniques are extremely easy to put into practice; Smiling is, hands down, the simplest and most “achievable” of them all! That is why it is Number One in our list!

 2. Put on your special ears

In a recent episode of the TV show “The Mentalist,” Patrick Jane (played by Simon Baker), is asked by someone who is amazed by his abilities: “Are you a psychic?” Patrick replies: “No, but I know how to listen!”
Just like smiling, the ability to listen has numerous benefits for a mentalist. As a matter of fact, I can tell you that if you don’t have that skill, or don’t want to develop it, you probably should forget about being a mentalist. Why? Because listening is actually paying attention. By listening you are showing genuine interest, openness and curiosity in what other people tell you.
First of all, as a mentalist, you want people to trust you and find you likeable. If you project an “I couldn’t care less about you” attitude, there is no way people will gravitate towards you.
People find listeners to be pleasant and trustworthy(!), so they will probably want to be in your company. Not only that, but since they perceive you as someone who is interested in them and open to their ideas, they will tell you things about them that would provide good information for a cold reading. As my subscriber, you will receive one of my favorite lessons about listening in the next few weeks. It will give you some wonderful tips to help you master listening into a whole new field of expertise!

 3. Hocus FOCUS

“You see, but do not observe. The distinction is clear.” -Sherlock Holmes
Focus: The power of observation – focusing and paying attention to even the most mundane details – is indeed very important!
In fact, being able to observe well, take in what you see, and then analyze it, is an essential quality for lots of people, not just detectives. Scientists, artists, and yes – mentalists! –rely on this ability in their work lives. As Sherlock famously said to his sidekick: “Elementary, my dear Watson!”
This ability to concentrate, focus, and draw conclusions from what you observe really is elementary for a mentalist. I can just “hear” you thinking (in a manner of speaking, of course; I can’t actually read your mind from where I am sitting): “My thoughts are all over the place, I am distracted, how in the world am I going to focus and observe like a mentalist should?
Don’t get discouraged – like other methods I’m teaching, you can develop this particular skill as well. This is not a “secret” open only to a selected few. It is accessible to anyone willing to learn and of course we will discuss it more thoroughly throughout the new year!

 4. Deep breath of confidence

You might be wondering: “Why on earth is confidence an important quality for a mentalist?”
Being confident of your abilities and powers is an essential tool for a mentalist – not to mention for anyone who wants to be successful in life.
Think of all the successful people who accomplished a great deal, people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, or other high-achievers you know. Do you think any of them would be where they are today if they lacked confidence in what they are doing and how they are doing it?
I do not think so – and I say that…with total confidence!
Mentalism is all about communication (both verbal and non-verbal) as well as building other people’s trust in your abilities. If you appear to lack self-confidence, why should anyone listen to you? To get people’s attention and incite their interest in what you say or do, you have to project an image of inner strength and exude a confident attitude. How else can you have “mind control” over others, when you can’t even control your own sense of insecurity?
However, let me clarify one point: having confidence in your special skills and abilities doesn’t give you the right to be arrogant, conceited, or have a “holier-than-thou” attitude. This kind of a mindset or behavior has no place in mentalism! There are three steps I teach on becoming more confident as a Mentalist… But you’ll have to wait for my confidence lesson to learn them!

 5. Assertiveness

As you are reading this paragraph, you will probably wonder what the difference is between assertiveness and the topic we discussed in the previous one, confidence.
Actually, assertiveness and confidence are very closely related. They go hand-in-hand. Simply put, in order to be assertive – to effectively express your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs – you must be confident first. In other words, self-confidence, as it is described in the previous chapter, will allow you to become assertive.
Now, many people might misunderstand the meaning of the word “assertive,” thinking it is synonymous with “aggressive.”
Not so! Just as self-confidence should not be mistaken for arrogance, assertiveness is not a ticket for an aggressive or hostile attitude either. Why is assertiveness an important tool for a mentalist? Because it is an essential skill when we are trying to build relationships and communicate with people around us – eventually leading them to do what we want them to do!
You simply can’t influence others without being assertive. It’s an hypnotic ability that you’ll have to master.

 6. What’s your attitude?

“The Right Attitude:” the kind of behavior that, to cite the title of an old book by Dale Carnegie, makes friends and influences people.
Obviously, you won’t make friends and influence people with a rotten attitude. You will, in all likelihood, make enemies or, in the very least, people who don’t like you. That, needless to say, is not an image a mentalist should project. Do I even have to say that?
The qualities I mentioned in the previous steps: smiling, listening, etc., are some of the positive behaviors that contribute the right attitude. But, there are more. For instance:
Be amused. What exactly do I mean by that? It’s similar to the power of the smile as I described in the first step. Well, showing amusement is part of the same dynamic.
Let’s say you use the tool discussed in step 2 – listen – whenever you are with another person or a group of people, and they are telling you a fun story. You should not sit there poker-faced – be amused, smile, laugh, show your enjoyment and appreciation. How you respond in a situation like this may determine whether people are drawn to your personality or find it flat and unattractive.
Why is this important? People are not drawn to mentalists who appear to be overly serious, humorless, and glum. In fact, such a person may remind them of the so-called “dark” side of mentalism (hypnosis, etc.) they may have read about or seen in the movies. That is not the true nature of mentalism – it should be fun and entertaining, not scary.
People are social beings so it is in our power to develop personality traits – all the ones mentioned in my program – that others find appealing. It’s not necessarily about what you are now, but about what you can become!

 7. How positive are you?

There is a reason why I left this particular “tool” as the last one: that’s because “positivity” is a compilation of all the other qualities that were mentioned throughout this article. Smiling, listening, being confident, assertive, and having a good attitude, are important elements on their own, but when they are combined together, the result is a positive mindset – a truly powerful tool for a mentalist.
In fact, as far as I see it, a positive attitude is not an option, but a necessity for a mentalist. As already mentioned before, a mentalist who exudes negativity and pessimism is not going to be successful in drawing people to him. Remember: a mentalist should be entertaining and amusing, which is difficult when you spread gloom and doom, rather than cheer!
True, staying upbeat is not always easy- and it certainly doesn’t come naturally to many people – because life is often full of hardships. Nobody can deny that. But keeping your head up and the spring in your step even when life throws curveballs at you can make all the difference!
Ask yourself: “Am I a source of a positive energy that lifts the spirits of those around me?” If you are, then I congratulate you, because you have mastered one of the most important skills in a mentalist’s tool kit!

In the introductory paragraph, I told you that the Seven Steps to Mentalism I would be outlining in this article would be simple and easy to accomplish. I also told you that these skills and qualities “lie within each of us. Sometimes they are ‘out there’ for everyone to see, and at other times they are buried deep within us and need to be dug out. But – they are all part of our human disposition.”

Now that you finished reading this, you know that I meant every word of that promise! Each of the “tools” described here is easy to put into practice. Even if they are not part of your personality, you can certainly work at developing them! You have the entire year ahead of you! It won’t cost you any money but will reap wonderful benefits!

Now, I can just imagine (being a mentalist, that’s easy!) what your reaction to the headline might be: “Why is Ehud likening Hanukkah to a terrorist event? Has he gone mad?” I can assure you that I am as sane as I have always been (okay, okay, I’ve opened myself up to the derision here), but bear with me for a moment and read on!

As you know, I am a proud Israeli. I am also a Jew and Judaism is my religion. Why? Because I was born to a Jewish mother. Not because I chose it. But I love it either way!
The Torah is a central concept not only in our faith, but also in the Jewish traditions. However, just because I love my country and inspired by Jewish teachings (especially Kabbalah), doesn’t mean I can’t (or shouldn’t) be interested in other faiths or be critical of some aspects of my own.

In fact, I love studying other religions to understand how the humankind “ticks” and what determines our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Just because I am considered to be “a part” of a certain religion or am attached to a set of principles dictated by my birth, doesn’t exclude a genuine interest in all the others. As a mentalist, my mind is wide open!

So – back to Hanukkah. Beyond the dreidel (a small four-sided spinning toy that I like to spin on its head) and latkes (crispy, fried potato pancakes that ruins my diet every year), and my big tour of Hanukka performances in so many Jewish synagogues and communities around the world – which all became a traditional parts of the Hanukkah celebrations more than anything this holiday commemorates an event that happened long ago, in the 2nd century B.C.

At that time, the Syrians and Greeks dominated Judea, the land that is currently Israel. However, a small band of faithful Jews led by Judah Maccabee (and therefore called the Maccabees) drove the invaders away, reclaiming the Temple in Jerusalem. They “cleansed” this holy site that had been “polluted” by the foreign presence and rededicated it as a place of worship. In their attempt to light the Temple’s menorah (candle holder), they found only one cruse of oil, but, miraculously, it burned for eight days. That is why Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and is called “The Festival of Lights.”

These events were described in the First and Second Books of Maccabees, but are missing from the Hebrew Bible. The omission has never been credibly explained, though some scholars have suggested that it has to do with pragmatism and politics, both of which were important considerations then as they are now. After all, the Maccabees’ revolt against the enemies was not exactly peaceful – the freedom fighters and the invaders did not hold hands and sing “The Kumbaya” together. As a matter of fact, many violent acts were committed by the Maccabees, the details of which are better left out of this blog.

But this brings up a valid question: were the Maccabees, the heroes behind the Hanukkah story, freedom fighters or terrorists? By the same token, if we look at what is happening in the Middle East today, can we draw a clear line between a legitimate action for a justifiable cause and outright terrorism?

There is a thin line between the two, so thin that there is no answer (though we can only hope that there is a solution).

Now, let me make it clear: I am not taking sides or re-writing history, just reporting it. Speaking of reporting, let’s imagine for a moment that the press, as we know it today, were covering the Maccabees’ revolt. Imagine the Temple in Jerusalem surrounded by reporters, TV crews, CNN, BBC, and other major media outlets. And imagine, too, that all these many news organizations reported the events in an objective and unbiased manner – as they should do anyway.

When you tuned in to the evening news you’d see Anderson Cooper or another journalist standing in front of the temple in a bulletproof vest, as their camera crews zoom in on bloodied bodies of Syrian / Greek fighters, civilians and children.

I do realize, of course, that it is quite a leap to transpose an ancient conflict to today’s sensibilities. It is possible, of course, that in modern times, with the presence of the United Nations as well as diplomacy, the conflict between the Syrian / Greeks and the Maccabees could have been resolved by more peaceful means. I guess we’ll never know but can always hope that would have been the outcome!

Why do I bring all of this up? I do not mean to stir a conflict or offend anyone, but, rather, start a debate. (In other words, don’t kill the messenger just because you don’t like his message!) I’d be interested to know what you think – not just about the events that gave us Hanukkah, but also, for example, the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S – how its origins lay in the gratitude the Pilgrims felt for having survived harsh conditions in the New World, but went on to enslave or slaughter their Indian hosts and seize their land. Or, any other historical event we celebrate today that has its roots in bloodshed and violence.

Send me your raves, rants, thumbs up or down, or any other reaction and feedback (no expletives allowed, though!).

In the meantime, let’s all decide that, whatever country we live in and whichever traditions we celebrate, we should promote and foster the spirit of peace, harmony, understanding, empathy, and generosity towards our fellow men and women. Let’s keep our minds open and our hearts warm.

If we can accomplish that, the world will truly be a better place, and then we can really hold hands and sing “The Kumbaya” together!

Don’t be an Internet Explorer – Get a (Real) Life

A couple of days ago Leon Panetta, the US defense secretary, spoke about a sophisticated cyber attack on the United States and other countries.

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta speaks about the Defense Department’s responsibility in cybersecurity during the Business Executives for National Security meeting in New York, Oct. 11, 2012.

“We defend. We deter. And if called upon, we take decisive action,” the secretary said. “In the past, we have done so through operations on land and at sea, in the skies and in space. In this new century, the United States military must help defend the nation in cyberspace as well.”

This comes after the Iranian nuclear project was delayed because of – what the media says – is an Israeli and American virus called “Flame” that mysteriously damaged the computers in Iran.

It made me realize how computers – just like in the movies – are indeed taking over our lives. Here’s an obvious paradox: computers make it easy for us to connect and communicate in cyberspace, but at the same time they can keep us from connecting and communicating in the real world.

Not only that, but spending too much time online can interfere with daily life and relationships, and, in some ways, make you lose touch with reality. (Do you really think “LOL” and “OMG” are actual words in the English language? Nope.)

And if you think of your computer as the keeper of your secrets, now we know for a fact that your ‘beloved-new-best-friend’ can suddenly betray you. A personal computer is not really so “personal.” It is easy prey to all kinds of nasty attacks, at the mercy of viruses that can cripple its system and disseminate your private information.

So what was it about “Flame” that made me so curious? It was supposedly developed by American and Israeli intelligence services, reportedly for cyber-espionage of Iran’s nuclear program. But don’t think that just because you are an innocent “private” person, your personal computer is safe from this virus – it isn’t! Flame is capable of reading your emails, stealing your database, and even record conversations happening near your computer, without your knowledge using BlueTooth technology. You can’t be sure who has access to all your information and knows all your secrets!

(And, just to clear the air – no, I can’t make those viruses disappear. You need a computer tech for that

I am bringing up this topic for good reasons, and loss of privacy is only one of them. Loss of interaction with the world and people around you is another. If we spend more time online than off, our ability to connect with others on a level that only a living, breathing, thinking, and feeling being can, might slowly become extinct.

What do you think will bring you closer to another person: holding their hand and feeling their touch on your skin, or getting smiley faces, virtual kisses, and “pokes” through email or instant messenger?

Having a relationship with a keyboard is no substitute for a contact with a real person – need I even say that? And the time you spend playing World of Warcraft (the mere name of this game should make you run for the hills), is the time you take away from friends and loved ones.

There was actually a study done a few years ago, which showed that for each minute spent on the Internet, there was a reduction of approximately one-third of a minute spent with family members. It may not sound like much, but if you crunch the numbers you will see that those 20 seconds per minute add up to a chunk of what could be quality time in the presence of another human being.

As a mentalist, I must tell you how important it is to stay away from cyber when possible. Although a friend of mine asked me to write a chapter in my book about ‘FACEBOOK READING’ which will help him ‘read’ the people on Facebook based on their status or comments (which I AM WORKING ON BY THE WAY! – It should be one very fascinating chapter in my program, and if you haven’t signed up for my list – you SHOULD! It’s free, and you’ll get the most amazing content that will help you touch the secrets of the universe!)
Why is it important to be among “living” people vs. “virtual” ones? Well, another research I read shows that real personal connections, especially the kind that include touching and hugging, are healthy for our mind AND body. Whether it’s a squeeze of the hand, a bear hug, or a massage, touching can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and relieve pain, stress, and anxiety. I believe in it. I know it works. As a mentalist I learned to understand that the interaction between people must use ALL our senses and computers simply ‘dismiss’ most of our senses!

No matter how advanced the technology gets, human feelings and needs remain pretty much the same, as this old song says:

You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss,
a sigh is still a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

Hey, it’s okay to use the Internet in moderation; after all, how else would you be able to read my posts and learn from me? But (and that’s a big BUT), you should strike a balance between your online time, and your experiences and relationships in the real world.

How can you do that? It’s quite simple, really:

Become consciously aware of people in your life. Have meaningful conversations, touch and hug your loved ones, open your eyes and ears to the environment around you.

Balance out social interactions with your own quiet time, so you can reflect on your day and silently listen to your inner voice.

Spend time outside and connect with nature and the earth in some way – smell the flowers, touch the grass, take invigorating walks and deep, cleansing breaths.

John Denver expressed it perfectly in this song:

Fill up my senses
Like a night in a forest
Like the mountains in springtime
Like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert
Like a sleepy blue ocean…

I wanted to unlock the secrets behind this beautiful art called Mentalism. Why? Because after the article that was published about me in the “Wall Street Journal” everyone I meet in the street (and not just Wall Street!) stops me and asks me to teach him (or her) some mentalist secrets! But that’s when I stop and ask: Do you even know what a Mentalist is? And that’s why I’m writing this article!

Yes, it’s no secret that EVERYONE wants to be Mentalists these days. There are many reasons for the popularity of the Mentalism art. But before we start learning the mentalist secrets – we must first understand what exactly is a mentalist – or more important: the difference between a stage mentalist and a real life mentalist.

What? There’s a difference between a mentalist who performs on stage or in corporate events and a “real life” mentalist? Yes! A huge difference! And this is the first thing I try to explain to my fellow street friends. What you see is (not) what you get. And what YOU see, is not what the mentalist can SEE. And believe me, there’s a lot for the mentalist to see!

But let’s start by understanding the secret tools of every mentalist, whether he works as an entertainer or hired by the police (such as Simon Baker – our favorite TV mentalist): Body language, Neuro Linguistic Programming and elements of hypnosis, great memory, cold and hot reading and other methods of that sort. The greater their knowledge – the better they become in ‘Reading’ the people and guessing their thoughts and feelings. The more knowledgable they are – the more ‘intuitive’ they become. I won’t go deeper into explaining my motto that says “Intuition Is Knowledge”, but I’m sure you’ll hear a lot about it in my future articles (hopefully you’ve signed up already to stay informed!).

The more mentalist secrets you know – the more ‘intuitive’ you’ll become

So a good “Real Life” mentalist uses the above mentioned techniques. A bad mentalist doesn’t use these techniques and instead he uses gimmicks and tricks to achieve an illusion of a real mentalist. A stage mentalist entertainer who performs his craft for a living is right in the middle. He uses all the techniques he learned – and keeps on learning on a daily basis – but he doesn’t stop there. You see, entertainers must achieve one very important goal in their performances. They must entertain. And what can you do – sometimes when you perform ‘live’ you don’t have as many achievements as you would in real life. There are many reasons… When you’re under the spotlight then your audience might be extremely excited and under these conditions it’ll be hard for you to analyze them and ‘read’ them. Or they might try to ‘fool’ you on purpose in order to prove you can’t read them!

That’s why stage mentalists must use additional techniques which aren’t what I consider ‘pure’ mentalism. If ‘pure’ mentalism will mean to meet a person and immediately know who they are and what they have in their mind – then a ‘dirty’ mentalism will be to TRY and read someone, but have some gimmicks to confirm the readings whether it’s the person’s thought or a different piece of information you need. And these gimmicks can be found (usually) in magician shops or other magic dealers. ‘Tricking’ your way to perfection

Here’s a great example that helped me achieve greater knowledge in reading body language to know if someone is lying to me or not: I would ask three of my friends to write something on 3 slips of paper. I would ‘trick’ them to think I don’t know who wrote what – when in fact I put a little mark on each slip of paper. Yes, I tricked them. They had no idea I know which slip of paper belongs to which person. Then I started reading the things they wrote. I asked them some questions about what they wrote and looked at all the signs I could get. The signs are eyes, mouth, and other subtle movements, expressions, the way they move their hands and of course – the way they speak (their pitch, pace, volume, tonality, rhythm and more!). Remember I knew who actually wrote what, so I could play along as if I don’t know and based on the things they told me I could tell who is lying to me and who didn’t. It helped me learn what certain people do when they lie. Isn’t it a great practice? I highly recommend that you’ll do it if you’re trying to learn how to be a mentalist.
