Emotions – both positive and negative – are beneficial should be adequately expressed. It happens though that a lot of people tend to suppress anger and other emotions to fit what they think is ‘socially-approved’ behavior. The thinking is that by hiding anger (or other negative emotions), you will not be seen as a ‘cry baby’. The resultant bottling up of emotions is harmful and often leads to relationship conflicts, trouble sleeping, and loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy doing. This post focuses on how you can use body language to get over anger and get back to feeling great.

1.     Look up

There’s a continuous feedback loop between body language and emotions. Each tends to affect the other. You can use this to your advantage the next time you feel like anger is getting the best of you. There are few things worse than saying nasty things when you are angry and having to apologize later because you didn’t mean it.

Looking up towards the ceiling or the sky is a great way to use body language to release anger. When people are in a negative state, they tend to look down. Think about a child who’s been caught misbehaving. What is their body language like? They most likely will look downwards and avoid eye contact. This is one way the body expresses a negative emotion. Looking down tends to trigger negative emotions. So the next time you find yourself firmly held in the grasp of anger, interpret the negative body language and do the opposite (which is looking up). You’ll essentially be interrupting your negative emotion and triggering happy hormones to be released.

2.     Force a smile

Did you know that forcing a smile or laughter can help you recover from anger and other negative emotions? Laughter is an excellent way to change your state of mind. The next time you find yourself getting angry or having a really bad mood, think about something that made you laugh. You may also watch something funny on your phone. It gets very difficult to stay angry when watching something that gets you to smile or laugh.

3.     Take a deep breath

Anger tends to make our breathing shallow and fast as the body slides into its fight or flight response mode. You can negate this influence by consciously changing your breathing pattern so that it’s longer and deeper. This helps take you back to a state of emotional control as you calm down. When breathing deep, focus on lengthening the duration of your exhale. For instance, you may count to 4 as you breath in, and then 10 as you empty your lungs. While exhaling, imaging that you’re breathing out the anger into the air. As you breath in, imagine you are breathing in joy, happiness, and positivity. Practice this whenever you’re feeling down and you’ll be surprised how fast it can change your state of mind.

4.     Write it out

Scientific research proves that expressive writing has therapeutic benefits. So whenever you find yourself getting angry or feeling really bad about something, put it in your journal. This helps clear out negative thoughts, and might even change your perspective. Once you’re done writing your emotions, feel free to get a match and burn the paper. Visualize all your anger (or whatever other emotion that’s pulling you down) going up in the smoke.

Any of these simple activities will help interrupt your negative state so you can feel great again. Bottling up negative emotions does more harm than good. Instead, focus on releasing feelings that are pulling you down in a healthy and constructive way.

Your body speaks to both the internal and the external world. Your body language has a major impact not only on how others perceive you, but also on who you are as a person. Bad posture impacts your physiological health, affects your mental outlook, and tells people a nasty story about yourself. Some of the biggest winners in life have used body language to express ideas, win arguments, and get what they want. This article shows how you can use body language to improve your moods and interaction with others every day.

Body language to battle depression

Did you know that your facial expression can impact your mood? Scientists at the Hannover Medical School in Germany found that by displaying less frown lines on their face, depression patients could improve their condition. Your body language has a direct influence on your emotions. If you adopt the body language of confidence (good posture, power pose, etc.) you tend to feel more confident. One the other hand, if you curl yourself up (poor posture, slouching, etc.), you tend to feel less confident and insecure. You owe it unto yourself to use positive body language to boost your moods. Start by improving your posture and other elements of positive body language.

Walk to open your mind

When people are really upset, we sometimes tell them to “take a walk”. Why? Because a simple walk can change the state of their mind. Research shows that when people walk happily (straight back with elastic, light steps), they tend to become more positive. People who walk unhappily (heavy steps, hanging shoulders) become more negative. Your posture affects your state of mind, and also determines whether you’re likely to pay attention to positive or negative information.

Force a smile to raise your spirits

Try to force a smile or laughter (for long enough) the next time you’re feeling down. You’ll probably be surprised to realize that this raises your spirits (even if for a moment). You can make this work even better by trying to picture something that you found hilarious (or that would make you laugh). It’s a great way to disintegrate a negative atmosphere and actually boost your moods.

Dance to cheer up

Have you ever been around someone who was trying to cheer you up? And you just realized how their enthusiasm was infectious? That was body language speaking. There’s something magical about what a little dance (either by you or someone close to you) removes a bad mood. But what if you’re in an environment where dancing would be inappropriate? Maybe you’re working at the office where there are customers and you’re trying to improve your mood…consider take a few paces or gently jog. It’ll have the same effect as a dance.

Body language has a major impact on how you feel, and how others see you. Invest a little time everyday to check your body language and find areas that need an improvement and work on that.

Benefits of good posture, benefits of proper posture, advantages of good posture, why you should maintain good posture, good posture tips

Did you know that the way you sit, stand and walk has profound implications on your mood and happiness? Various studies have pointed out that good posture has many more benefits than just reducing back pain and building your core muscles. It increases your clarity of mind and betters your mood. In this post, we point out 6 incredible benefits of good posture.

1.     Prevents constipation and improves digestion

When you slouch over, your intestines fold and cramp. This may lead to a wide array of issues, one of which is poor digestion that disrupts proper intake of nutrients and increases your chances of constipating. There’s significant evidence that slouching also increases your chances of getting a heartburn. By teaching yourself to maintain a good posture, you are actually doing good for your digestive system.

2.     Reduces circulation

Your body needs fluids to keep operating in optimal condition. When you slouch over, you impair circulation of fluids and gases in your body, which may lead to tension headaches. Neck strain as a result of bad posture could also lead to high blood pressure. By maintaining a good posture, you make it easier for your body to operate optimally.

3.     Improves memory

Although there’s still a lot of research work to carry out in this regard, there’s some evidence that sitting up straight may improve your memory. A team of researchers recently concluded that good posture boosts the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain by up to 40%, thus making sure that your brain is nourished for optimal performance.

4.     Increases energy

Psychologists have for a long time emphasized that power poses do impact how we see ourselves. Slouched, narrow positions make you appear less confident, less powerful and less assertive. On the other hand, power poses do project higher confidence, which increases your energy and can help reduce stress and anxiety.

5.     Improved muscle health

Maintaining a good posture allows your ligaments and muscles to work as they were designed to. This keeps them healthy. Over the long term, proper alignment (through good posture) can help avert your risk of suffering from muscle aches or muscle fatigue.

6.     Reduced risk of injury

Maintaining good posture lowers your risk of injury. If you stand and bend as you should (with good posture), there’s a lower chance that you strain your neck or back muscles. Doctors already emphasize that poor posture can lead to problems with the spinal disk. That’s why it’s utterly important to maintain good alignment even when conducting simple and small tasks.

Do you acknowledge that you have a bad posture? It’s time to start working on improving how you sit, stand, and even walk. You’ll miss out on all these awesome benefits if you continue with your bad posture. All you have to do is make a conscious effort and watch your posture whenever you’re sitting at home, or working at the office. This article offers some incredible tips on how to maintain a good posture.

Interpersonal relationships are a very important aspect of your personal and professional life. Given that we encounter new people almost daily, it’s paramount that we work on our skills to better relate to others. Although human behavior is not something that can be defined by simple rules, there are certain things you can do to be nicer, friendlier, and more interesting to others!

1.     Know yourself

If you want to improve your people skills and relate better to others, the first stop should be endeavoring to know yourself better. When you know yourself thoroughly and understand what you have to offer, you get more social confidence and will be able to invest in the right interpersonal relationships.

Be kind to yourself. It’s very hard to connect and empathize with others if you can’t do the same with yourself. If you’re often critical of yourself, learn to treat yourself kindly. This is always a good stepping stone to take your interpersonal skills to the next level.

2.     Read a lot

Contrary to common misconception, good people skills are unnatural. It is something that you can learn and work on. One of the best ways to learn more about people and how to improve your people skills is to read books on the subject. Start with ‘How to Win Friends & Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie. This is one of the best books you can ever read to improve your people and leadership skills. There are many other good texts dedicated to the topic that will definitely hone your skills.

3.     Improve your Listening Skills

If you’re not a good listener, then you’ll find it hard connecting with people. We all want to be around people who listen and pay attention to what we are saying or feeling. The good news is that if you are not a good listener, you can read on how to improve this skill. The 9 Steps to Influence is a good place to learn both active and passive listening, as well as other key skills that will make you more influential around others.

4.     Study and Use Body Language

Scientists, mentalists and other specialists have all agreed that body language is (almost) always more powerful than speech. Up to 93 percent of all human communication is nonverbal. You’ll be surprised how people judge you based on how you’re standing, or how you’ve placed your hands or legs. If you’re truly committed to improving your people skills and becoming a better communicator yourself, spend a little bit of your time each day to master body language. The Secrets of the Voice book offers a few incredible tips on how you can use the power of the voice to your advantage.

5.     Learn to Manage Stress

If you’re stressed or anxious, you almost certainly will not be able to do well with other people. It’s crucial that you learn to recognize and manage your own stress signals. This way, you’ll be on a level to help others. One of the greatest books you can read on how to manage stress is ‘How to Stop Worrying & Start Living’, also by Dale Carnegie.

Once you’ve focused on these things, you’ll be a much better team member, spouse, parent, and colleague to the people around you! A good way to get started is to commit about 30 minutes of your time every day to learn about body language and people skills!

You probably already know that positive body language can have a profound impact on your life. Amy Cuddy, a Harvard scientist who has dedicated her studies to the impact of body language on success, confidence, and influence, argues that positive body language can have a powerful effect on anyone. Positive body language refers to things like active listening, proper eye contact, and certain targeted gestures that can make anyone more competent, more likable, and more persuasive. In this post, we are going to look at 7 impacts of positive body language on your life.

1.     Change your Attitude

According to Amy Cuddy’s research, and studies conducted by other psychologists, adopting positive body language has a profound impact on your hormones. Cuddy also noted that adjusting your body language to make it positive improves your attitudes. This is a major benefit, given that a positive attitude can make you more successful when tackling challenges in your work and personal life.

2.     Improve your Presence

By improving your body language so that it’s more positive, you can dramatically improve your own presence. You can send better signals out there and change how people perceive you. Whenever you’re feeling a little depressed, you can always use power body language to get your energy back. Trying standing up, expanding your chest, and holding your head high for just 2 minutes. More likely than not, you’ll notice how you feel better and more confident. By adopting positive body language, you can also have a good impact on the people around you.

3.     Increases Testosterone

Testosterone is an important hormone in your body, whether you’re a man or a woman. It doesn’t just have to do with sports, competition and athletics. It boosts your confidence and makes you come across the board as more confident and trustworthy. Scientific studies have proved that positive body language can boost your testosterone levels by up to 20%.

4.     Prevent Conflicts

We use a specific body language whenever we are angry or upset. By mastering defensive body language, we can tell it when the people we are interacting with get upset. Just imagine how many negative interactions you can avoid this way. Improving your own body language and gaining proper insight into the body language of others is one good way to prevent conflicts.

5.     Connect Better with People

Up to 93% of all human communication is non-verbal. By adopting a positive body language, you become a more powerful communicator. This will, in turn, help you connect better with the people around you, and expand your horizon in the professional sense.

6.     Decreases Stress Hormones

Studies have proved that positive body language decreases levels of cortisol (a stress hormone that negatively affects performance and causes negative health effects over time) by up to 25%. By levels of this hormone in your body, positive body language can minimize stress and boost your performance in everyday tasks.

7.     Improves Emotional Intelligence

One of the major facets of emotional intelligence is your capacity to effectively portray your ideas and emotions. People with negative body language have a destructive, contagious effect around them. By working to improve your body language, you can boost your EQ (Emotional Intelligence) and be a better person around others.

By taking a few minutes each day to make your body language better, you can change your life for the better. There are lots of online courses on body language available online, and you can learn at your own pace!

You probably have heard it before – mindset is everything. Mindset refers to the established set of attitudes that you hold. Since you can’t control what happens in life, the best you can do is control your mindset. Your brain is wired to think in a specific way, but we all have the power to reprogram our mental circuits so we can think in a certain way. The brain is configured to obsess over negative emotions rather than dwell on the positive ones. For instance, if you’re having a great day but then something happens for just a few minutes, it could change your moods, perspective and energy for the entire day. If you have an open mindset, the possibilities are endless. Once you start to realize the power that your mind wields, and how you can transform it, your life will never be the same again. In this article, we offer a few practical suggestions why mindset is everything!

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right

Did you know that your own thoughts are a self-fulfilling prophecy? Your chances on success simply narrow down to whether or not you believe in yourself. If you think you can accomplish something, there’s no force in this world that can possibly stop you. Many people have had excellent business ideas and did nothing about it, simply because they didn’t think they could do it. Most of us have been in situations where we knew just what to do to get our life to the next level, but just didn’t have the guts for it. If you get your mindset in the positive direction, then there’s no limit to what you can accomplish!

Mindset attracts knowledge

knowledge is power

It’s a proven fact that the knowledge you need to accomplish any goal is created through your mindset. Once you fix your mindset so that it’s fixated on the intelligence level you need to create, then you’ll realize a greater onset of the knowledge you need to excel in that area. If you have fixated on building a powerful relationship with your family or launching a successful business empire, a positive mindset will make it easier for you to gain the knowledge you need to accomplish these feats.

Mindset increases focus and resilience

focus and resilience

If you have a rigid way of thinking through your mindset, then you are more likely to be focused and resilient when it comes to accomplishing your goal. If your way of thinking, on the other hand, is subject to changing every now and then, this won’t allow you to polarize into being a particular type of person, which means you it won’t allow you to accomplish the end-goal mindset that you need.

Keep the faith

Having the correct mindset will help you to keep the faith as you pursue your goal. When there’s no faith, then there can be no positive correlation. Keep in mind that faith is the major component in the creation of realities. What you believe is really what comes about. It is important that your mindset is enriched with the right believes about your situations and plights. This way, you’ll set yourself on a clearer path to achieving your goals!

When you have your mindset right, you can expect deeper insights into future situations, consistent focus, drive and commitment, a feeling of joy from pursuing your goals, and a sense of purpose and certainty!

reading body languageNonverbal communication forms a social language that is deeper than our words can ever be. Mastery of nonverbal communication can bestow unique advantages in both your personal and business life. This perhaps explains why so many life skills coaches emphasize on the important of understanding body language. As you embark on your journey to master body language so you can make your life a whole lot better, it’s important to keep the following body language facts in mind.

1.     Everything is not black and white

What many body language experts don’t tell you is that everything is not black and white. Specific gestures do not have specific meanings. Rather, they are ambiguous. For instance, if someone crosses their arms, this could be construed to mean that they are signaling defensiveness. But they could also be cold, or just trying to get comfortable. As you endeavor to master body language, keep in mind that gestures should only be interpreted based on the specific circumstances. There’s no single rule that applies to all.

2.     Reading facial body language can be tricky

facial microexpressions

Most adults have mastered the art of masking their true feelings, which makes the face a poor place to start with while reading body language. People need to just get along at home, at work, and in various social settings. For that reason, they are always pretending to smile, and assuming bland expressions when they’re actually pissed. For the most part, the face is a polite mask that veils our genuine feelings from the world. Understanding this can come in handy as you embark on improving your body language reading skills.

Still, the face can give away some of our strongest feelings, though what are referred to as micro-expressions. These are unexpected leakages of our real emotions that break through the mask that is the face. Such micro expressions can appear for a fraction of a second, and it’ll take you a lot of training (and practice) before you can master how to pick them up.

3.     Body language signals intent

A common misconception out there is that body language signals meaning. Instead, body language conveys emotional intent, with some pretty good accuracy. Scientific studies prove that our feelings first show in the body, before registering in the conscious mind seconds later. If you’re impatient, angry, happy, or hungry, your body will to a great extent show these feelings. Thus, learning to master body language has everything to do with learning to decode other people’s intents, not specifically their conscious thoughts.

4.     You’re best placed to read the body language of people you know

You’re better placed to read body language of those you know than any body language pro out there. People can easily tell when their spouse is pissed, or when their kid is bored. You can even tell when your boss needs something done by you. Since you’ve spent a lot of time with people in your close circles, you’ve amassed a wealth of knowledge on their body language signals. Nonetheless, even the people we know best may deceive us!

You probably are already familiar with Jim Rohn’s truism, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. Jim Rohn the self-help guru and popular motivational speaker, might not be bulls-eye right, but his saying definitely packs a lot of truth. In this post, we’re going to dive deeper into how the people you spend the most time with (could be your friends, workplace colleagues, or even family members) affect your chance at success.

Who are you spending time with?

It doesn’t matter how talented you are, who your parents, are, where you were born, or even how smart you are! The people you spend time with have an impact on who you eventually turn out to be as a person. Who you spend most time with can pull you up just as much as it can bring you totally down. Scholars agree that the environment we live in does affect who we are, as well as our characteristics and behaviour!

Follow the following simple steps to troubleshoot your own circle:

  1. List down the 5 people you tend to spend most of your time with. These might be your spouse, your close friends, or your workplace colleague. Don’t worry if they’re less than five, just write their names down.
  2. Now that you have your list of the people you spend much time with, ask the following questions: who are they? What are they doing with their lives? Are they optimistic, happy, ambitious, enthusiastic, or sad?
  3. Carefully evaluate who these people are. Do they press you forward when you present new ideas? Are they always discouraging you? Are they helping you accomplish your own goals, or totally putting you off?
  4. At this level, you’re able to see clearly, and decide who you really want to continue spending your time with. Don’t be hesitant if only one person in your list makes it! It’s okay to lose some friends, if it’s for the better.

Successful people surround themselves with driven people

Successful folks tend to spend time with other like-minded, driven people. If you’re serious about levelling the playing field and being able to move forward without anyone pulling you behind, you’re going to have to find good people you can spend time with. ‘Good’ people can be anyone. They can be some of your friends, a few of your family members, that one co-worker, or even an acquaintance that you met recently. Good people are the happy, positive folks who can enrich your life. They are the people who are that person who incessantly encourages you to hit the gym so you can meet your weight loss goals, or that all-time fan who keeps encouraging you to go for the next milestone! They are people who do inspire you to be a better version of yourself.

Keep in mind that ‘good’ doesn’t mean similar. You want to bring a little diversity into play here, so you can grow in all areas. When you’re surrounded by the right people, you’re surrounded by life. You’ll find joy in everyday things, and you’ll be less stressed. You can really commit to start spending your time with people who have a positive impact on your life!

If you’re a human being and not a Game of Thrones Night Walker, you’ve been heartbroken at some point in your life. Some of us have been heartbroken more times than we care to count. It’s a human condition. One interesting thing that comes to mind when I think of heartbreak is why we tend to feel like we have a giant home in the chest. Most of us tend to think that heartbreak is just a series of sad and hopeless emotions. But the truth of the matter is that heartbreak is actually an illness! In today’s post, let’s look at why we feel chest pain when heartbroken.

What scientists say

The terms ‘gut wrenching’ and ‘heartache’ describe both emotional and physical pain. But how do emotions trigger physical sensations? When we experience a heartache, stress-induced sensations such as increased heart rate, muscle tightness, shortness of breath and abnormal stomach activity happen. Emotional stress entails the same brain parts as physical pain, which essentially means that the two are very closely intertwined.

The brain thinks you’ve been physically hurt

When you get dumped (especially viciously), it might feel like someone punched you in the stomach, knocking the wind out of you. The feelings that follow can be confusing and incredibly hard to deal with. Well, while nothing physical has happened to you, your brain literary tells your body that the pain is real!

There’s a surge in stress hormones
