I never came across someone who didn’t desire to be a better person. However badly you think you’re doing, there’s always a new chance to change things. And however good you think you’re doing, there’s always a few more things that you can do to make yourself an even better person. This article highlights some practical action steps that you can take to make your life better this year.
1. Practice optimism
This is one of the most impactful things you can do to make your life better this year. You don’t need hours to master optimism. All it takes are a few minutes per day and you’ll be good to go. Optimism changes patterns of brain activity associated with good moods. It’s one great way to develop your mental strength and increase your energy to tackle challenges.
2. Creative thinking
What can you do to sparkle that creative genius that’s hidden deep within you? Spend some of your time to explore the unknown. Routine and habit can kill your creativity and stifle you. You need to challenge your mind and break the routine by doing things you’ve never done before. Maybe you could get a new hobby, learn a new language, draw pictures, or just take a trip somewhere…the list is endless.
3. Get fit
There’s no underestimating the benefits of exercise for your health. If you’re overweight, obese, or just not fit in any way, do something about it! Jog ever morning or a few times each week after you get home from work. If you can get into this routine, you’ll find that you become more energetic and that you feel much better about yourself.
4. Increase you vitality
Whenever you find yourself feeling tired and lazy while stuck in the office, you can turn things around by daydreaming. Yes, daydreaming! Visualizing yourself outside below the sky and canopied branches can go a long way towards increasing your energy levels. If you are able to, spend some time in a natural setting just relaxing and being yourself.
5. Give
Researchers have established that giving triggers a positive feedback loop that leaves you feeling happier. So every once in a while, give. You might donate to charity, help out someone who’s stuck in traffic with a broken-down vehicle, or just do anything else to make another human being feel better. You’ll end up feeling good about yourself this way.
6. Cultivate healthy dieting
Give yourself a shot of good health this year by making better diet choices. You want to do more about your health as you’re getting older, and that probably means it’s time to forget about the chips, cookies, and all those other junk foods that a lot of us are accustomed to. Spend your money on fruits, vegetables, and other healthy food choices. As goes the popular saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’.
7. Read
Books tend to be concentrated hubs of knowledge and wisdom. The more books you read, the more knowledgeable and wise you’re going to be. So make sure that you read a couple of books this year. You can start with texts specifically meant to enrich yourself, such as ‘The Science of Getting Rich’, ‘7 Habits’, ‘Think and Grow Rich’, ‘Who Moved My Cheese’, etc.
8. Overcome your fears
We all have fears. Some people fear the uncertainty of the future, while others fear public speaking, taking risks, etc. These fears are an obstacle that prevents most people from breaking the glass ceiling and growing. It’s very important that you recognize what your fears are, and work towards overcoming them.
9. Create your inspirational room
You cannot escape from the mood and tone that your environment is setting for you. If you make your environment inspirational, then you’re going to get inspired. If you wake up in a dull and messy room every day, that’s going to set the mood for you. Consider doing a major room revamp to make your environment more inspiring. This way, you’ll find it easy to reach your peak every day.
10. Wake up early
Successful people wake up early and ask what good they can do in the day ahead. Waking up early (5-6 am) also increases your productivity, as well as the quality of life. You can think about it this way – when you wake up early, your mindset is set for productivity, and you’ll find that you’re ready to continue the momentum. Do whatever it takes to get into the habit of waking up early!
The time to make a change for a better you is now. Get started doing the things we have covered above right today, and keep the momentum. Keep in mind that the only way to achieve your goals is one day at a time!
